Welcome. I’m Dr. LaRose. I am a Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist who works with professionals, parents, college and graduate students, and anyone who is struggling with mental illness and wants to heal and grow. I use a combination of psychotherapy, lifestyle modification, mindfulness techniques and medications to help you develop mental health.
ABOUT DR. LAROSE
Philosophy

Modern psychiatry focuses on treating symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety and depression with medications. Some medications work well and many have even saved lives. Unfortunately, some medications have significant side effects and are habit forming. There is a place for medications but they are not a panacea. We need medications to help when symptoms significantly interfere with our function, but in order to fully heal, we also need to explore the underlying causes of our symptoms. Once we address these causes, we can then work on developing mental health. Mental health doesn't just mean the absence of mental illness. Mental health includes living a meaningful life while accessing all the emotions we evolved to feel including surprise, sadness, fear, anger, happiness and joy.
My treatment process includes looking at you as a whole person. We can check to see if there are any medical problems or nutritional deficiencies contributing to your symptoms. We can explore your past and address why you developed any maladaptive habits, what you can change, and how to find motivation to change. We can discuss aspects of positive psychology such as forgiveness, gratitude and resilience that will help you heal and grow as a person. We can create goals for a more fulfilling life such as improving the quality of your relationships, finding meaningful work, spending time in nature, eating healthier food, moving your body, or finding time to rest and play.
Who am I

I’m Anna Terajewicz LaRose, M.D., my friends call me Ania and my kids call me mom.

I’m a Holistic Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist located near Albany, NY. I am not only a psychiatrist but also a patient. I started learning about psychiatry during my first year of medical school when I had an episode of depression and was asked to get treatment before continuing my studies. My journey towards mental health began there.
I have learned first-hand that psychiatric treatment works best when it is combined with other interventions that address the whole person. Over the years I have honed my skills with medications & psychotherapy and also learned complementary skills to improve mental and physical health.
My Tools

Because of my training and life experience, I have become aware of the benefits and the limitations of current psychiatric care.

The type of psychiatry I practice is holistic. This means that I treat the whole person. By looking at the whole person, including your background, family history, medical illness, stressors, lifestyle, and where you find meaning, we have a better chance of improving your symptoms.

When you work with me, I can offer:
Medications - I am board certified in General Adult Psychiatry and have been prescribing medications since 2011. Sometimes medications are necessary, sometimes they are not. I can help you find the right medication at the right dose. I can also help you minimize or come off medications that are doing more harm than good. I can confirm that there are no medical contributors to your symptoms such as low thyroid levels, low vitamin levels or anemia. I can also order genetic testing to determine which medications are safest for you to use.
Talk Therapy - I have trained in a variety of psychotherapies including interpersonal, motivational, cognitive behavioral (CBT) and psychodynamic. I can help you look at your past in a constructive way, and see where it may be holding you back. My style of therapy tends to focus on the present and how you can make changes while taking into account the habits of mind formed by your past. If you have a therapist, I can work with your therapist as a consultant.
Supplements - Micronutrients, vitamins, probiotics, and herbs can be a complimentary part of your treatment. I can help you determine if these are safe and what can be most effective for your specific needs.
Lifestyle modification - Without proper sleep, exercise, food and rest, our bodies and minds cannot function optimally. We can discuss your current lifestyle habits and set goals to help increase your physical wellness.
Mindfulness practice - Using mindfulness, meditation and yoga is one way to help unlock self awareness and insight. It can also be a way to ground and relax the body and mind. I can show you techniques to help your specific needs or refer you to providers who can work with you one on one or in groups.
Habit modification - I am board certified in Addiction Psychiatry and can help you face unhealthy patterns of behaviors such as overuse or abuse of drugs and alcohol, engaging in unhealthy relationships and/or maladaptive perfectionism.

Referrals and collaboration- I can help you determine what other therapies may be helpful to you such as acupuncture, somatic therapies, different kinds of psychotherapy or further medical workup. I can collaborate with your current providers as a part of your treatment team.

I cannot safely work with individuals with acute suicidal intentions or those with acute psychosis. I also cannot work with individuals who have severe substance use disorders who are in need of medical detoxification.
